Cinema films death at work. By embalming traces of the living, film functions as a form of mummification as well as a site where the dead are incessantly resurrected through the life-giving motion of the film projector. The Carousel is a video performance lecture that pries open the crypt of cinema’s undead.
Navigating through a matrix of film samples, Soda_Jerk draw out the peculiar temporality of cinema and the spectacle of death that lurks beneath it. This work emerged from the artists ongoing investigation of hauntology, an area of research that also informs their video series The Dark Matter Cycle.
Developed during studio residencies at Fremantle Art Centre and Künstlerhaus Bethanien Berlin, The Carousel will be launched in Sydney as part of Serial Space’s Performance Lecture Project.
