Start of Heath and Pete residency blog…
This all started with me (Pete) writing a solo proposal for the Serial Space residency. As part of my disastrously expanding project Extensions of a No-Place, I have started writing a series of fictitious characters, which inhabit my works on paper and sculpture. As the stories expanded, it became clear that some of them would work as films. Heath and I had been chatting previously about various things video editing related, and so I started writing him into the proposal – i.e. “Heath Franco could come in and show me how to film/edit this…etc.” Having seen a bunch of Heath’s shows and having a rough idea of his intentions with the characters he has been assembling, I realised that the structural similarities in our work were quite extensive, and as such it would make a lot more sense to do a 50/50 collaborative residency. Thankfully Heath agreed and we put together the new proposal. My Extensions of a No-Place project revolves around an infinitely expanding, unplanned imaginary landscape, in which I experiment with various narratives of landscape construction, from 18th century gardening tips, utopian architecture, Chinese scholar painting and sci-fi computer games. Heath’s installations, from Wundercloset, Funhouse and Parkland have been creating a series of discreet characters, which inhabit a similar kind of anonymous urban wasteland. The existing structural proximity of our two projects was the starting point for our residency at Serial Space.
